Treat Others How You Want to Be Treated

respectRespect is a very important aspect of life, especially growing up and becoming a teenager.  Whether you are talking to someone your age, an elder, or someone younger than you, you should always grant that person respect, even if they have not given you a reason to deserve it.  You should always treat others how you want to be treated, you cannot walk around being an arse to everyone and then get upset when they are not kind back to you.

If you are a kind and respectful person to all, you shall more often than not receive that in return.  It will also project a better picture of yourself to those who have not met you.  If someone has only ever heard that you are rude and disrespectful, they will be less likely to want to get to know you. Whereas if they have only ever heard good things about how respectful you are, they will be much more likely to welcome you with open arms when they meet you.

A good place to remember this is in school.  If you have a new teacher and that teacher has only heard how rude you are, you will surely start off on bad terms, instead of the teacher giving you a chance to prove yourself to him.  If you treat your teachers with respect, you will receive that back from them.  Even if you have a teacher that is not very good, if you treat her respectfully, she will be kinder in return. (And she probably doesn’t receive much respect in from other students, if she isn’t a good teacher.)  I have a few teachers in my school that are not great, but I still try to be kind and respectful to them even though most students are not.  Because of that they give me respect in return and make it easier for me to make up assignments that I have missed when I was out sick.

Remember this with your parents, too.  If you are respectful to them and have a good behavior, they will be more likely to reward you for your good behavior by extending your curfew or with other rewards, like an increase in allowance, if you get one.  You cannot be rude to your parents and expect them to give you everything in return. Like anything else in life, you have to work for people’s respect and when you receive it your hard work has paid off.
